It’s May. The days go by so fast we literally have no time to stop and stare. In the midst of such frenzy, how can we pause and savour any milestone if we have no clues what to look out for? Birthdays are a given; people generally mark those. But there are several other moments in life that require us to stop and absolutely gush over. No matter how busy life gets, or how crazy, don’t miss these moments.
- Receiving Your First Salary Alert:
It’s usually your smallest, but no other will fill you with as much pride and excitement.
- Driving Alone for the First Time:
Driving becomes commonplace all too soon. Enjoy your moment of bravery when you first dare to go on the road all by yourself.
- Graduating from School:
You’ve not only accomplished something after years of hard work and discipline, but your friends, family, and community are there to congratulate you. Bask in the moment.
- Donning your NYSC Outfit:
Never mind that half the country has served; when you put on that uniform, know that the very moment for which the scheme was created has come.
- Leaving Home:
It can be thrilling to leave your family home and go start your own life, but it can also be heartbreaking to leave the theater where all your memories up to that point were made. Before you go, walk from room to room, and reflect on the good times you shared there once more.
- Having an Adult Conversation with Your Parents:
At some point your parents go from being rule enforcers to your peers. When they open up about their hopes and dreams — and tell you about things they couldn’t before — you need to pay attention.
- Enjoying a Great Meal:
Does your mom, dad, or grandparent cook a meal that you love? Order the groceries and visit from time to time. While there, focus on savouring each bite, remembering the taste and texture. One day it will be just a memory, and even though you’ll have the recipe, it won’t ever taste quite as good as when they made it.
- Visiting Hallowed Ground:
It doesn’t matter if it’s a visit to your village, a religious pilgrimage, or a trip to your favourite Football Club’s grounds. Time spent in these places is special.
- Taking a Trip With your Friends:
Time often pulls friends in different directions; and when you have spouses and kids, it only becomes harder to see each other. That’s why it’s so important to soak up these moments when you have them. Maybe vote money to a common account, and plan a trip.
- Experiencing Disappointment:
There are ways to gain from them. First, you learn from your hurts. Second, it impresses upon the world that you are a unique human being, with your own set of ideals, preferences, and choices that need to be respected.
- Doing Something All By Yourself:
It could be braiding your own hair, making your own clothes, or giving your apartment a new paint job. It’s exhilarating to always have that reminder of your awesomeness.
- Falling in Love:
Love can take on new definitions as we grow and learn, but there’s nothing quite like the euphoria of the first time we fell in love. Savor it by writing a song, poem, or in a journal. It may sound cheesy, but one day, when you’re looking back, you’ll be glad to have it.
- Communing with Nature:
This is a beautiful world we live in. Taking the time to enjoy the glory of a sunrise, the enchantment of the Obudu Mountain Resort, or the grandeur of Zuma Rock is well worth it.
- Getting Engaged:
This only happens once (ideally). Make it special. How about a pre-ordered token that says, “I am not just accepting your choice of me, I am also choosing you!”?
- Getting Married:
So much happens on your wedding day that it’s easy for it all to become a blur. Pausing to take a few moments of reflection on the big day is wise.
- Witnessing the Birth of Your Child:
The awesomeness of this moment can overwhelm the senses and make it difficult to remember things clearly. Staying calm and even jotting down your thoughts as they come to you is smart.
- Going on a Date With Your Kid:
They grow up so fast. Give all of yourself to the innocence and fun of sharing some dates with your kid. Just the two of you.
- Attending an Event of Your Dreams:
Have you always dreamed of seeing the World Cup or the Olympics, your music icon in concert, or a Food Carnival? If you get the chance, remember to treat it like the special event that it is.
- Enjoying a Family Vacation:
Sure, there’s little privacy and almost always a fight or two, but you’ll reminisce about these trips for the rest of your life.
- Succeeding at Work:
Too often work can be a thankless slog, but there are successes mixed in with the mundane. Whether it’s with a simple but magical presentation or teaching a struggling student to read, you need to revel in those moments when they come.
- Watching Your Parents Interact with Your Child:
Put down the phone, forget your worries, and just watch. It’s not only incredibly sweet, but will take you back to when you were a kid long ago.
- Celebrating Anniversaries:
Don’t shrug off anniversaries. They mean something has lasted the test of time, and that’s worth honoring.
- Giving to Others:
These moments connect us to our fellow humans and our sense of empathy. Stopping to think about what you’ve done will make you more likely to do it again.
- Completing Your Last Day of Work:
For better or worse your job is where you’ve spent the majority of your time for many years. Before you leave it behind once and for all, think about what you’ve accomplished, and drink in the sights, smells, and people you did it with.
- Appreciating this Moment Right Now:
While some moments are more profound than others, every single one we experience is worthy of our appreciation and gratitude, no least this one that opens you up to beautiful possibilities that lie ahead.
