The reading culture of young people in Nigeria is paramount to the educational and economic growth of the country. This is why Guaranty Trust Bank plc created the YOU READ initiative.
After months of severe work on refurbishing the Herbert Macaulay Library, Yaba – Lagos, GTBank has finally fulfilled one of it’s Corporate Social Responsibilities, aimed at turning traditional Libraries into sophisticated facilities to help young people read more.
The Library was transformed from a place of neglect into a state-of-the-art home of books, with fully air-conditioned rooms, computers and internet to enable a conducive environment for studying. The newly refurbished Herbert Macaulay Library, Yaba was re-commissioned on Tuesday, July 11th, 2017, by the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr. (Mrs.) Oluranti Adebule, and the Managing Director of GTbank, Mr. Segun Agbaje.The re-launch had students, authors, book lovers, family members of the late Herbert Macaulay, and state officials in attendance. The event was spiced up by an interactive book reading session by four-time author, and CEO of Okadabooks, Mr. Okechukwu Ofili, who shared his life-changing experiences about the importance of reading books and reviving the reading culture.

- It is one of the oldest Libraries in Lagos State.
- It is home to one of the oldest bibles [Apocrypha] in the world.
- It opens to the public on Mondays – Fridays: 8:am – 4:pm.
