Should your choice of postgraduate school be determined by the course of study or vice versa? Let’s talk about priority.
At different stages of your life, you are faced with making a choice; choosing a school or a course to study is just one of those choices. However, caution is required in this case, as a bad choice can ruin your career for the next two to four years, or even more.
Here is a scenario: you applied to two schools: your dream school to study your dream course and another school, which you do not fancy that much, to study your ideal course as well. Luckily, your ideal school offers you an admission but to study another course while the other school admits you for your dream course. Note that your choice at the end of the day will decide the outcome of your career. Which will you go for?
Although it is a tough decision to make, it’s quite simple when you take out every bias and analyze the situation logically.
Disadvantages of picking a school over a course
It is true that you should select the right college for a successful career but remember that the University alone cannot make a successful career. Your interest and your passion are highly important to succeed in your career. When you pick a school as against the course, you may end up with a career that is not in line with your passion. The reason you did not study your choice course shouldn’t be because you didn’t like the school.
Advantages of picking a course over a school
Put your passion first – the course! Selecting a course that will take you to your future will provide a favourable environment to work hard and make better grades. Having a good academic record is of more importance compared to the college from which you did the course. However, you should enquire more about the program structure and quality of teaching in the other school as well as how you intend to survive while you are there.
