In the book Eat, Pray, Love, Elizabeth Gilbert stipulates that “Every city has a single word that defines it, that identifies most people who live there. If you can read people’s thoughts as they were passing you on the streets of any given place, you would discover that most of them are thinking the same thoughts. Whatever that majority thought might be- that word is the word of the city. And if your personal word does not match the word of the city, then you don’t really belong there.” If we were to give a word or phrase that describes the energy of Lagos, it’ll be “raw ambition.” Lagos is a city filled with Nigerian hustlers (international hustlers too) all trying to aim for the undefined Nigerian dream. Many are so engrossed in the pursuit of this ideal that they fail to see the beauty around them, and yes, there is beauty all around Lagos. From the windswept beaches of Badagry to the historic houses in Yaba, beauty abounds. It’s time to visit Lagos if you have not and if you live here, when last did you break from the rush to stop and stare?
Lagos truly has something for everyone: culture, business, fashion, art and natural beauty. A common quote used in Nigerian lingua is “shine your eyes” which translates as “be smart.” We’d like to transcribe another meaning “see the beauty.” See the beauty in Lagos and all around Nigeria.
